A Brief Background of the Character and the Life of Imam Ali

The personality of Imam Ali has reached the heights of honors and glory to reflect greatness in the minds and souls. His own characteristics, his spiritual and material manner become a light and marker for every expert thinker and seer historian. He is the brother, the guardian, the minister, and the successor of the prophet, the prophet said to him (O Ali, you and I are the fathers of this nation). Imam Ali is the second personality in Islam after the prophet Mohammed; the prophet was sent by Allah (God) to the worlds and for all humanity to guide them to the right way.


Imam Ali was born on the thirteenth of Rajab, 23 years before Hijrah and his birth was in Kaaba (which is the Muslims Kiblah) in Mecca (One of the cities of Saudi Arabia) where no one has been born before or after ever in this holy place.






His father Abu Talib bin Abd Manaf bin Abdul Muttalib bin Hshim and his decent ends with Ibrahim (one of God's messengers), his father was one of the nobles of Mecca and he was defending the prophet.


His mother was Fatima Bint Asad bin Hshim bin Abd Manaf whom was as mother to the prophet which raised him in her lap and took responsibility of him; the prophet has committed himself to her and loved her so much, also she took a lot of his attention and interest. It was narrated that when she died, the prophet made a shroud from his clothes and he dug the grave with his bare hands and slept in her grave and said (Allah, who gives life and causes death, absolve my mother Ftima Bint Asad and enlarge her grave, all for the sake of your prophet Mohammed and the prophets whom were before me, you are the most merciful).


The prophet took custody of Imam Ali from the day of his birth; this is due to the fact that he knew that Ali is his successor and the leader after him, his minister and the carrier of his flag, so he (Ali) was accompanying him in day and night. He accompanies him even in his lonely moments. They were worshiping Allah (God) in a place that was full with atheism, therefore, everyone witnessed to Ali the cleanliness from the polytheism and has never worshiped any God but Allah, and he (Imam Ali) said (I was following the prophet like a young camel following its mother; every day he is enlightening me with new morals and asking me to follow him. He goes to hide in the cave of Hirah every year and no one knows or sees him but me; I see the light of prophecy and the message, I also smell the scent of the prophecy. I heard the whizzing (buzzing) of Satan when Jibrael (an angel who represents the revelation of the prophecy) descended to the prophet, then I said (O prophet what's this buzz, he said, this is Satan lost hope in me worshiping him. You (Ali) see what I see and you hear what I hear, but you are not a prophet, you are a minister and you are on good).


Ali is a symbol of Islamic manners and morals. He is an example to be followed. He was very tolerant, humble, and very approachable to all people despite his glory and greatness and despite the wrongfulness of the people on the other side; on the contrary, he walked with them side by side to the degree that he equates himself with them.


On the 19th Ramadhan in year 40 of Hijrah when Imam Ali left his house to the mosque of AL-Kufa he was attacked by Abdulrahman bin Muljim Almurady on his head with a poisoned sword when he (Imam Ali) was praying; on the 21th day he passed away (died) to meet his creator.




He is buried in AL-Najaf (One of the cities of Iraq) and many people visit his holy shrine every day.
